Quality Loss Function Notes:
In quality control, other than the specification limits of the products, a tolerance limit is also set which provides an allowable range within the process for variation. When the products are produced outside the specification limits but within the tolerance limits, they are considered non-defective. However, according to the quality loss function (QLF), the products should be produced according to the specification limits and all the products outside specification limits but within tolerance limits are defective and incur a loss to the society. For example, if the specification limits for a rod is 3cm ± 0.5cm diameter and the produced one has 3.4cm diameter, the value is very much close to being outside the limits but the traditional concept considers it to be a conforming product. On the other hand, Taguchi concept of QLF will only accept the products with exact diameter of 3cm.
