Muda Definition:

Muda Notes:

Muda is a Japanese term which refers to 'waste'. It is a key concept of lean manufacturing where the main focus is on waste reduction. When the waste is reduced, increased profitability is achieved. There can be many types of wastes in a process or system. Shingo identified seven types of wastes in a production process. These are overproduction (the waste of producing more products than actual need/or stocking the products for future demands), waiting (the time unfinished products take to wait between two workstations), material handling (the movement of products between the work stations), inappropriate processing (using expensive products where simple tools or equipment would have been sufficient), unnecessary inventory (work in process inventory and the stocking of finished goods in the warehouse), unnecessary motion (excess movement of worker), and defects (rework or scrap).
