Defect per Million Opportunities Notes:
In the situations when the numerical measurements of product characteristics cannot be made, attribute data is used for process capability study. The most common attribute data used in quality management is conforming and non-conforming units. The defects present in a product are termed as non-conformities and the products with non-conformities are called non-conforming. The defects per unit can act as a measure of process capability, however, it does not include the complexity of a unit product. In order to incorporate complexity, another measure can be used which is called defect per million opportunities. This is calculated by dividing total number or defects over the multiplicative answer of number of units and number or opportunities. Opportunities in this case are the chances of defects that can occur in a unit. Opportunities must be defined first and the definition should be consistent over time.
