Steepest Ascent Definition:
Method of steepest ascent is a procedure for moving sequentially along the path of steepest ascent i.e. in the direction of the maximum increase in the response.

Steepest Ascent Notes:
Response surface methodology is used to model and analyze a system in which several different variables or factors affect the outcome or response. The objective of response surface methodology is to optimize the response. Sometimes, the estimate made by response surface methodology is far from the actual optimum response. In this case, another method is used which is called steepest ascent. Steepest ascent method allows the experimenter to sequentially move towards the actual optimum response by following the patch of maximum increase in response (also called steepest ascent, hence the name of the method). The path of steepest ascent is followed until no increase in the response is detected or the point of actual optimum response is reached.
