Co Ordination Number Definition:

Co Ordination Number Notes:

Coordination number is defined as the number of atoms, ions, or molecules that a central atom or ion holds as its nearest neighbours in a complex or coordination compound. It is not necessary for an atom or ion to have only one characteristic coordination number. The coordination number of an atom in a molecule or polyatomic ion is found by counting the number of atoms bound to it but not by counting the number of chemical bonds. We can say that the coordination number is a description of the number of neighbour atoms with respect to a central atom.
