Dative Covalent Bond Notes:
To understand the concept of dative covalent bond, we need to understand a covalent bond first. A covalent bond is a bond formed by the sharing of pairs of electrons between two atoms. A dative covalent bond is a covalent bond (a shared pair of electrons) in which both electrons come from the same atom. Another name for dative covalent bond is co-ordinate bond. A co-ordinate bond is represented by an arrow. The arrow points from the atom donating the lone pair to the atom accepting it. An example of dative covalent bond is the reaction between ammonia and hydrogen chloride. In this reaction Ammonium ions are formed by the transfer of a hydrogen ion from the hydrogen chloride to the lone pair of electrons on the ammonia molecule.
