Diazotisation is defined as the first step in the making of an azo dye. This step involves the reaction of phenylamine and nitrous acid. This reaction gives a diazonium salt as its product. In this reaction there is nitrosation of primary aromatic amines with nitrous acid (generated in situ from sodium nitrite and a strong acid, such as hydrochloric acid).
