Process by which the three-dimensional structure of a protein or other biological macromolecule is changed, often irreversibly is called denaturation.

Denaturation Notes:
Denaturation is defined as the alteration of a protein shape through some form of external stress (for example, by applying heat, acid or alkali). This is done in such a way that it is no longer able to carry out its cellular function. Denaturation has great importance as it causes the breaking of bonds, which are responsible for supporting the secondary structure of proteins. Chemical denaturants, such as urea or guanidinium hydrochloride are used to induce denaturation.
