Cracking Notes:
Cracking in chemistry is the process by which heavy hydrocarbon molecules are broken up into lighter molecules in the presence of heat, pressure or catalysts. This process has great importance in chemistry as it is used in the commercial production of gasoline and diesel fuel. This is done by breaking carbon-carbon bonds. The temperature and presence of catalysts predicts the rate of cracking. Cracking also involves the breakdown of a large alkane into smaller and more useful alkenes. The requirement of high temperature and pressure is very important for the process.
