Ligands, such as water and ammonia, which can form only one co-ordinate bond from each ion or molecule to the central transition metal ion are called monodendates.

Monodendate Notes:
Lewis bases that donate a single pair (mono means single) of electrons to a metal atom are called monodendate ligands. Monodentate ligands can be either ions (usually anions) or neutral molecules. Only one atom of monodendate ligands is capable of binding to a central metal atom or ion.
