Electronic Configuration Definition:

  • A way of representing the arrangement of the electrons in atoms showing the principal quantum shells, the sub-shells and the number of electrons present is called electronic configuration.

Electronic Configuration Notes:

Electronic configuration is defined as the distribution of electrons of an atom or molecule in atomic or molecular orbitals. A basic understanding of this arrangement is that the four different types of orbitals (s,p,d, and f) have different shapes, and one orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons. The p, d, and f orbitals have different sublevels so they can hold more electrons. Electronic configuration is very important in chemistry as many of the physical and chemical properties of elements can be understood by their unique electron configurations. The electrons in the outermost shell, called valence electrons, are the determining factor for the unique chemistry of the element.
