An atomic orbital can be considered as a region around the nucleus in which we can find an electron. It can also be considered as a mathematical function that describes the wave-like behaviour of either one or a pair of electrons in an atom. Electrons jump between orbitals like particals. Simple names of orbitals are s orbital, p orbital, d orbital and f orbitals. These names of orbitals play an important role in describing the electron configurations of atoms. Each orbital has a characteristic shape and name. The probability of finding an electron around the nucleus can be calculated by the knowledge of atomic orbitals.
