Bidentate ligands have two donor atoms which allow them to bind to a central metal atom or ion at two points. An example of bidentate is ethylenediamine in which a single molecule can form two bonds to a metal ion. Bidentate ligands can be considered as Lewis bases that donate two pairs ("bi") of electrons to a metal atom. Another example is of oxalate ion.
