Born Haber cycle consists of a series of reactions and enthalpy changes used for calculating the lattice energies of ionic crystalline solids. The lattice energy is the enthalpy of the reaction. There are a number of steps involved in this cycle and this happens in such a way that the enthalpy at each step is added to a sum that represents the enthalpy of overall reaction. These steps are, atomization of metal, atomization of non metal, ionization of metal, ionization of non metals and formation of the ionic solids. For example, a born Haber cycle of sodium chloride is used to calculate its lattice energy.
