Catalyst Definition:
A substance that increases the rate of a reaction but remains chemically unchanged itself at the end of the reaction is called catalyst.
Cambridge International AS and A Level Chemistry by Ryan Lawrie, Roger Norris
Catalyst Notes:
A catalyst can be defined as a substance that performs the function of speeding up a chemical reaction. The important thing to remember here is that the catalyst itself is not consumed during the chemical reaction and thus it remains unchanged. There are many types of catalysts for example, industrial catalysts, biological catalysts etc and each catalyst is of different nature. Enzymes are also catalysts called biocatalysts and life is not possible without them because without the presence of catalysts, it is impossible to carry important chemical reactions on time. Catalyst provides an alternative pathway by which the reaction can proceed.
