Arenes Notes:
Aromatic hydrocarbons are termed as arenes. The word aromatic refers to the pleasant smell of arenes but now we have discovered that every arene necessarily does not have a smell and the word is used for a specific type of bonding. Benzene is the simplest arene. Its formula is C6H6. Arenes up to eight carbon atoms are colourless liquids with characteristic odour. Higher members of arenes are solids. Arenes are fairly soluble in organic solvents but insoluble in water due to the presence of long hydrocarbon part which is the benzene ring. Arenes are reactive and we can see that electrophilic substitution reactions and addition reactions can be found in arenes.
