Base Notes:

A base can be defined as a chemical specie that donates electrons, accepts protons and releases hydroxide ions. Types of bases include Arrhenius base, Bronsted-Lowry base, and Lewis base. Common examples of bases include, calcium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide etc. Bases react with acids to precipitate salts and this is called neutralization. Bases have a bitter taste and soapy feel on fingers. A method to identify bases is the use of litmus paper. Bases turn red litmus paper blue. Bases are very useful as they can be used for the manufacture of soap, paper, synthetic fiber, bleaching powder etc and they are also very useful for cleaning purposes.
