Functional Group Definition:

Functional Group Notes:

Functional groups play an important role in chemistry as it is easy to classify organic compounds according to the functional group present in them. It is a group present in a molecule that has its own properties regardless of the other atoms present in that molecule. Functional groups help us to determine the properties and chemistry of organic compounds. There are about 14 main functional groups that are the key. In addition, there are 8 other groups. The main functional groups are alkane, alkene, alkyne, benzene ring, amine, alcohol, ether, alkyl halide, thiol, aldehyde, ketone, ester, carboxylic acid and amide. These are attached to organic molecules to form compounds that attain their properties.
