Alkaline Earth Metals Definition:

Alkaline Earth Metals Notes:

The term alkaline earth metals refers to six elements: beryllium (Be), Magnesium (Mg),Calcium (Ca),Stronium (Sr),Barium (Ba) and Radium (Ra). All these elements belong to the second group of periodic table. They have the same oxidation state which is +2. All these elements are light. They are very reactive and their reactivity order can be understood by knowing that Barium and Radium are the most reactive elements while Beryllium is least reactive. Alkaline earth metals are actually slightly soluble metal oxides that is why the term earth was given to them. Alkaline earth metals are also very useful as beryllium and magnesium are used in the manufacture of alloys, calcium and barium are used to remove last traces of air from vacuum tubes and radium is used in radiotherapy.
