Amphoteric Notes:
An amphoteric molecule is capable of behaving as both, an acid and a base. This means that an amphoteric substance has the ability of donating a proton as well as accepting an electron. Water, amino acids, hydrogen sulphate ion and hydrogen carbonate ion are common examples of amphoteric substances. They may be used in isoelectric focusing to maintain a stable pH gradient. Reactions of acids and bases with amphoteric substances play a very important role in chemistry. If an amphoteric substance reacts with an acid, it behaves like a base by accepting proton and if it is reacted with a base, it behaves like an acid by donating proton.
