Alkanes Definition:
Saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2 are called alkanes.
Cambridge International AS and A Level Chemistry by Ryan Lawrie, Roger Norris
Alkanes Notes:
Alkanes are a series of organic compounds consisting of carbon and hydrogen atoms where all the carbon atoms are bonded to each other only by single bonds. They are called saturated hydrocarbons. Alkanes are also called paraffins. They are unreactive. Alkanes are either straight chain, branched or cyclic. C n H 2 n+2 is the general formula for alkanes. Methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, decane etc are the names of alkanes depending on the number of carbon atoms present in an alkane. Alkanes are non polar and insoluble in water. The lower members of alkanes are gases while higher members are waxy solids. Alkanes are present in natural gas and petroleum
