  2. A term referring to the property of mycobacteria to retain carbol fuchsin even in the presence of acid alcohol. staining procedure is used to diagnose tuberculosis.

Acid Fast Notes:

Acid-fast are the organisms or bacteria such as mycobacteria, whose cell walls contain lipid substances in large amounts and are known as mycolic acids. These cell walls cannot be stained by ordinary Gram stains, therefore, dyes such as fuchsin can be used to stain these lipids in the cell walls and this dye cannot be decolorized easily by using acid alcohol.
