Work in Process Notes:
Some products or items must wait during the production process due to many different reasons. The reasons can include preparing the machine for processing, occupied work station, or end of the working shift etc. The partially finished products or item that wait in a production process at any specific buffer point are termed as work in process. Work in process must be reduced in order to reduce the cycle time of the product, increasing the process efficiency in return. There is a specific cost associated with work in process. For example, in a production process, the necessary work on a part is completed on one work station, the part moves to the next station where work is still being performed on another part. The first part has to wait for its turn to be processed. The part waiting will be called work in process.
