It is always important to know the effect of an organization's operations on environment. There is a growing concern regarding environment protection all over the world. Many regulations have been passed in this regard. Due to the international pressure, companies now incorporate the concept of sustainability in their strategies. Organizations try to implement environmental management systems in the attempt to prove themselves responsible citizens. Through this systems issues like, waste management, environment protection, health and safety of workers etc. are addressed. The concept of sustainability has also been incorporated in quality management. For this reason, techniques like lean production have been adopted whose primary focus is on waste reduction within the organization at all levels (shop floor, information system, transportation etc.).
