Cpk Definition:

Cpk Notes:

Process capability ratio Cp does not consider the process mean in the calculation. However it is important to also consider the process mean and determine the location of the process mean relative to the defined specification limits. In order to incorporate the process mean in the calculations, another process capability ratio can be used which is denoted by Cpk. Cpk considers one-sided process capability ratios i.e. difference of process mean from upper specification limit divided by 3 sigma (Cpu) and difference of lower specification limit from process mean divided by 3 sigma (Cpl). The minimum of these two one-sided capability ratios give Cpk. When the value of Cp is equal to Cpk, it means that the process is centered on the mean. But when the value of Cpk is less than Cp, it means that the process is off-centered.
