Redundancy Definition:
A technique for avoiding failure by putting backup systems in place that can take over if a primary system fails is called redundancy.
Managing Quality: Integrating the Supply Chain by S. Thomas Foster
Redundancy Notes:
Redundancy refers to adding the same component or part within a process again in parallel for using in an emergency situation i.e. duplication of a system component. It is to be kept in mind that not all components are duplicated but only the critical ones. A redundant component sits idle in a system and is only used when the actual component fails. So redundancy is a way of providing backup in a system. By incorporating redundancy, a system becomes more reliable and efficient. For example, in a process, milling machine is a critical part and the product cannot move to the next workstation without being processed on the milling machine. If it fails, the production process would stop. So a backup machine must be present which will be in effect when the milling machine in the system fails.
