Joseph Juran (born 1904) has done a lot of work in the area of quality. The concept of quality for Juran was strategic and based on planning activities. His understanding regarding quality was that most of the quality problem rise due to poor planning and quality can be improved by carefully planning the quality functions. He introduced a three step approach for quality improvement which is called Juran Trilogy. The first step is planning which involves providing the proper resources in both design and production phases to produce products meeting customers' needs. The second step is control which enables to keep check and monitor the workforce to actually produce the products the way they were designed and planned. Finally, the third step is to improve the overall process in order to avoid any defects.
