Acceptable quality level (AQL) is defined as the maximum percentage or proportion of nonconforming items or number of nonconformities in a lot or batch that can be considered satisfactory as a process average.

Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) is the number of defective products that are allowed within a lot of products that is accepted. Acceptable quality level is the level of percent defective that is related to producer's risk i.e. Type I error or ?. The risk associated with acceptable quality level is that a good lot of products is rejected. Lots of Acceptable quality level should have less chances of rejection. Although sampling plans with acceptable quality level usually accepts a shipment, but sometimes the opposite happens. A sampling plan accepts the lot 95% of the time based on acceptable quality level.
