Average Run Length Notes:

While developing control charts, some important considerations must be made. Two main values must be specified that are sample size and sample frequency. Sample size is the total number of observations in a sample while sample frequency shows how frequently the samples must be drawn. There must be a trade-off between sample size and sample frequency. A way to determine the sample size and frequency is average run length. Average run length of a process control chart shows the minimum data points that must be plotted until an out of control condition. Average run length can be calculated through 1/p where p is the probability that a data point will be out of control limits. For example, if the average run length is 310, it means that even an in-control process would give an out of control point every 310 samples.
