Control charts are the most common statistical process control tools. A control chart is used to monitor a process and detect any variation in the process that can affect the quality of the product. The characteristics or specifications of the products that can be considered in control charts can either be variables or attributes. Variable data is the one that can take on continuous numerical value e.g. height, weight, diameter etc. The charts that are used to plot the variable data of the products is called variable control chart. A variable control chart is of different types. The two most commonly used variable charts are X bar chart (plots the means) and R chart (plots the ranges).
