Polarizing Power Notes:
If the degree of polarization is very small, an ionic bond is formed, while if the degree of polarization is large, a covalent bond will be formed.. The ability of a cation to distort an anion is called as its polarization power and the tendency of the anion to become polarized by the cation is termed as its polarizability. Polarizability is the ability to form instantaneous dipoles. It is a property of matter. Polarizabilities determine the dynamical response of a bound system to external fields.
