An environmental problem caused by fertilisers leached from fields into rivers and lakes is called eutrophication.

Eutrophication Notes:
When a water body becomes overly enriched with minerals and nutrients, there is excessive growth of algae. This is termed as eutrophication. It is considered to be an environmental problem because due to this growth of algae, the level of Oxygen in water is lowered. It is extremely harmful for aquatic life as the depletion of Oxygen kills aquatic life. The lowering of Oxygen is caused when algae die. This results in bacteria and this bacteria uses up Oxygen dissolved in water.
