Recessive allele Definition:

Campbell Biology by J.B. Reece, L.A. Urry, M.L. Cain, S.A. Wasserman, P.V. Minorsky, R.B. Jackson
Recessive allele Notes:
A recessive allele can only express itself when it is in the homozygous form. A good example of this is sickle cell anaemia. The allele for sickle cell anaemia is recessive therefore just one copy is not enough to have sickle cell anaemia. The person must have two copies. However a person having one copy is called a carrier and can pass on the gene to the offspring.
