Produced either from the bacterium Streptomyces venezuelae or synthetically, Chloramphenicol is used for a variety of bacterial infections. A common example is an eye ointment for the treatment of conjunctivitis. In oral or injection form, the antibiotic is used for the treatment of plague, typhoid fever, cholera and meningitis.
