  2. Notochord is a rod that extends along the dorsal side of the chordate embryo.

Notochord Notes:

The notochord is a flexible rod made out of a material similar to cartilage. If a species has a notochord at any stage of its life cycle, it is, by definition, a chordate. In vertebrates the notochord becomes part of the vertebral column. The notochord lies along the anteroposterior axis, is usually closer to the ventral than the dorsal surface of the animal, and is composed of cells derived from the mesoderm. The notochord has been observed to have many functions including developmental functions. The most commonly cited functions are as a site of muscle attachment and it being a vertebral precursor.

Notochord Notes:

The notochord is an elastic or flexible rod made out of a material that has a similarity to cartilage. If a species has a notochord at any stage of its life cycle, it is classified as a chordate. The notochord in vertebrates becomes part of the vertebral columnand lies along the anteroposterior or the head to tail axis. It is usually closer to the ventral surface of the animal and is comprised of cells derived from the mesoderm.
