Any kind of permanent changes in the nucleotide sequence of the DNA is called a mutation. There are many different kind of mutations, some are silent and do not produce and deleterious effects however some are very dangerous and can lead to severe disorders. Mutations can happen spontaneously, can be inherited or can be induced by mutagens for example UV rays etc.
