Cyanobacteria constitute a large phylum of gran negative bacteria, also termed as Cyanophyta. They are the only photosynthetic prokaryotes and obtain their energy from the process of photosynthesis. The term cyanobacteria is derived from Greek Κ υ α ν ό ς, kyanόs which literally means blue. Due to their color, they are also termed as "Blue green algae".
