Competence, in microbiology, is the cell's ability to modify its genetics by taking up extracellular or naked DNA from the surrounding environment in the process known as transformation. Natural competence is a genetic ability of bacteria and can occur in natural conditions or in a lab. Artificial competence involves the treatment of cells in lab cultures to make permeable to DNA for a short time.
