Autolysins are enzymes that act against bacteria and digest the cell- wall peptidoglycan of the bacterial organisms that produce them. They are potentially lethal and are used universally among bacteria that contain peptidoglycan. These enzymes break down the peptidoglycan matrix in small sections as the matrix is very rigid.
