Sludge produced in sewage treatment that does not settle properly, usually due to the development of filamentous microorganisms.

Bulking Sludge Notes:
Sludge bulking takes place when in the sedimentation tanks sludge fails to separate out. The growth of filamentous bacteria is the major cause of bulking sludge. Filamentous microorganisms grow in elongated strands that have much greater surface area and volume and are settle slowly.
