In genetics, a test cross was first introduced by Gregor Mendel. This type of test involves the breeding of an individual with a phenotypically recessive individual, in order to determine the zygosity of the former specie by analyzing proportions and traits of the phenotype of the offspring. Zygosity can either be heterozygous or homozygous.
