Maternal effect gene Definition:
A maternal effect gene is a gene that, when mutant in the mother, results in a mutant phenotype in the offspring, regardless of the offspring's own genotype.

Maternal effect gene Notes:
A maternal gene effect is a phenomenon where the phenotype of an organism is determined by not just the environment and its genotype, but also by the environment and genotype of its mother. In genetics, maternal effects occur when an organism shows the phenotype expected from the genotype of the mother, irrespective of its own genotype. This usually happens because of the mother providing the messenger RNA or proteins to the egg. These maternal effects lead to phenotypes of offspring that sometimes increase their fitness.
