Positional information Definition:
Positional information are the molecular cues that control pattern formation, tells a cell its location relative to the body's axes and to other cells.

Positional information Notes:
A widely used mechanism for pattern formation in many animals, is based on positional information. Cells acquire positional identities in a carefully coordinated way and then interpret this information according to their genetic constitution and also developmental history. In many animals such as fruit fly, there is a cascade of gene activity which leads both to the development of periodic structures, the segments, and to their acquiring a unique identity.
