p53 gene Definition:

  • P53 gene, named for the 53,000-dalton molecular weight of its protein product, is a tumor-suppressor gene.

p53 gene Notes:

p53 is an example of a tumor suppressor gene that encode a specific transcription factor that promotes the synthesis of cell cycle-inhibiting proteins, so in this way it functions as a tumor suppressor protein. That is why a mutation that knocks out the p53 gene, like a mutation that leads to a hyperactive Ras protein, can lead to excessive cell growth and cancer because the inhibition of the cell cycle gets abrogated.
