Introduction to Statistical Quality Control by Douglas C. Montgomery
Trends Notes:
Control charts are used to monitor the processes. Different types of control charts can be developed according to the available data. Whichever type of control chart is used for a process, the control charts must be interpreted correctly to take appropriate actions. During interpretation of control charts, especially variable charts (X bar and R charts), some non-random patterns may occur. One of them is trends. Trends in control charts can be identified when data points continuously move in one direction i.e. either towards upper control limit or lower control limit. There can be many different reasons for trends. Trends can occur due to human errors or causes, tool wear and tear and seasonal conditions etc.
