Operating Characteristics Curve Definitions:

  1. Operating characteristic (OC) curve provides an assessment of the probabilities of acceptance for a shipment, given the existing quality of the shipment.

Managing Quality: Integrating the Supply Chain by S. Thomas Foster

  2. An important measure of the performance of an acceptance-sampling plan is the operatingcharacteristic (OC) curve which plots the probability of accepting the lot versus the lot fraction defective.

Introduction to Statistical Quality Control by Douglas C. Montgomery

Operating Characteristics Curve Notes:

When percent defective of different lots are known or assumed, the probability of acceptance of the lots can be determined by constructing Operating Characteristics (OC) Curves. OC curves also help in developing sampling plans. OC curves can be constructed either using binomial distribution or Poisson distribution. Four steps are involved in constructing operating characteristics curve. Values of percent defective in a lot or shipment are identified (p). Multiply the percent defective values with the respective sample sizes (n). Using the values from step 2, probability of acceptance is calculated. Finally the operating characteristics curve is constructed.
