Lead Time Notes:
In order to improve a process, the process must be understood first. This understanding can be made by graphically representing the process through flow charts. One of the type of process flow chart is value stream mapping that includes all the value added and non-value added activities associated with the process. Data about the process can also be collected through value stream mapping for further analysis. One type of data that can be gathered is lead time. Lead time is the amount of time that a product takes to flow through the entire process from start till the end. Lead time is related to the initiation of the process all the way to the completion of the process. Lead time is measured by elapsed time. For example, if a customer places order of a laptop and the laptop is received by the customer in 3 weeks, lead time is considered to be 3 weeks.
