Electrolysis is the process by which electric current is passed through a substance to cause a chemical change. In this chemical change, the substance loses or gains an electron. There is a voltage called decomposition potential and this voltage is required to occur electrolysis. In the process of electrolysis there is an interchange of atoms and ions by the removal or addition of electrons from the external circuit.
