An acid and base on each side of an equilibrium equation that are related to each other by the difference of a proton is called conjugate base pair.

Conjugate Pair (Acid Base) Notes:
A conjugate pair is defined as an acid-base pair that has a difference of one proton in their formula. It is important to remember that a conjugate pair is always one acid and one base. A common example of conjugate pair is HCl and Cl-. We can say that HCl is an acid and Cl- is called its conjugate base. This can also be reversed and we can correctly say that Cl- is a base and HCl is its conjugate acid.
