Pheromones Notes:
A pheromone is a chemical secreted or excreted by organisms that triggers a social response in members of the same species. Pheromones are capable of acting like hormones outside the body of the secreting individual and they impact the behavior of the receiving individuals. There are many different types of pheromones including those for alarm, food trail, and many others that affect behavior or physiology in some way. Pheromones are used from basic unicellular prokaryotes to complex multicellular eukaryotes.

For example, when a foraging ant discovers a new food source, it marks its path back to the nest with a pheromone. Ants also use pheromones for guidance when a colony migrates to a new location. Pheromones serve a wide range of functions that include defining territories, warning of predators, and attracting potential mates. The polyphemus moth provides a noteworthy example of the use of pheromones by the release of it in to the air by a female that assists her to attract a male of the species from a long distance away.
